More than half of the world 's population has access to the Internet. There are 4,021 billion people (53% of the world population) who can be considered internet users. This is the data provided by We Are Social, a company that annually collects and distributes data relating to the diffusion of the internet, and beyond, at a global level. Furthermore, during 2017, the number of global users registered on social media also grew: today there are around 3.2 billion (at the end of 2016 they were 13% less). Just as the number of users who use mobile devices to access the internet has also grown, now representing 49% of the world population. Why is it important to analyze this data? Every day we are reached by news regarding the digitalisation of the world in which we live: from schools, to healthcare, passing through factories, offices, cities, public administration, commerce and banks, just to mention some of the areas in which the digital transformation is taking place. Taking a look at the numbers underlying this process helps us understand the dimension of a phenomenon which, at different levels, has an impact on our lives on a daily basis.

According to the photograph released by We Are Social, in January 2018 the number of Italians with access to the Internet represents 73% of the population, i.e. more than 43 million citizens . If we consider that the number of residents in Italy is around 60 million, of these 57% (around 34 million) are active on social media, while 83% use mobile devices (49.19 million). Among instant messaging apps, however, the undisputed leader is certainly WhatsApp , used by 59% of users, while Facebook Messenger stops at 39%. On Facebook, in particular, there are 34 million monthly active Italian users, 10% more than in January 2017. Of these 34 million, approximately 88% access Zuckerberg's social network from mobile, 48% are women , while male profiles are 52%.
